Unirii Square
‘Spitalul Brancovenesc’, or Brancovenesc Hospital, foundation of a princess, monument of architecture and a true institution in Bucharest as one of the oldest and most prestigious hospitals, used to stand in the bustling Unirii Square area, where a large and busy market place existed since the beginnings of the city. In the 1980s it was razed down by Ceausescu, in a time when the entire area was brutally remodeled to make way to the Palace of Parliament and the new communist Civic Center. On the left side of the picture and behind the fountain one can distinguish a portion of the famous House of the People – Ceausescu’s folly – Bucharest Palace of Parliament. The wide boulevard leading to it was cut through what used to be Spitalul Brancovenesc.
